MUSÉE SOMME 1916

Set at the heart of the Battles of the Somme (1914-1918), in a tunnel which was converted into an air-raid shelter in 1938, The Somme Trench Museum recreates the life of soldiers in the trenches in the July 1916 offensive on this Front, where the allies attacked the positions held by the Germans.

The struggle that took place on the Somme in 1916 was one of the most terrible battles of the First World War. It was a conflict in which a large number of different nationalities participated and sustained losses.

From our entrance hall next to the Basilica visitors enter a 250 metre long tunnel that is 10 meters below ground. As you leave the tunnel you enter our souvenir shop and ultimately Albert’s town park.

Here WW1 scenes in a series of fifteen different alcoves tell the tale of trench warfare in the Somme.

We also have 22 displays cabinets in which you can study all kinds of WW1 artefacts and weaponry.

Sound and light effects add to the experience, taking you back to the time of the Great War.

The museum also boats…

Once you have visited our museum it is really worth following the Poppy Trail over the WW1 battlefields to become acquainted with the many historical sites, monuments and cemeteries.
